John Mainwaring's biography of Handel was the earliest published. Charles Burney recorded an account of the five day extravaganza of concerts commemorating Handel. Among the events was a gargantuan performance of the Messiah with a chorus numbering into the hundreds. The background image to this page depicts (where visible) the seating arrangements for a portion of the men's chorus. Burney included portraits of the composer, including one that served as a model for Handel's memorial in Westminster Abbey.
